MVP hunting
MVP hunting
The MVP Arena, the kill announcements and the PvP zones that open while an MVP is alive on Project Ragnarok Online.
MVP hunting
MVPs are the hardest thing in the game and the best paid. pRO changes none of their drops and none of their experience. What it adds is a way to reach one without camping a spawn for six hours, and two things that happen on the field when one is alive.
The MVP Arena
One random MVP, alive, in an instance of your own. Solo or with a party, from base level 81. The MVP is drawn from those with a live spawn in the current episode, so the arena never hands you something the world has not unlocked.
Drop and experience rates inside are exactly the rates outside. Nothing is multiplied. What is limited is how often you can go:
| Free runs | 5 a week, per account, costing nothing. |
|---|---|
| With a ticket | Up to 3 more, paid with MVP Arena Tickets from the Cash Shop. |
| With Rachel's Favor | Up to 2 more: 30 Favor for the first and 90 for the second. Favor is earned in game, so this is the route that costs no money. The second run is dearer on purpose: at one flat price a weekly winner could pay for both out of their own winnings. |
| The hard cap | 10 runs a week, and no more. Buying every ticket available does not take you past it. The cap resets on Saturday. |
Every account that enters pays a run of its own, not just the party leader. Otherwise a party of five would rotate leaders and take five times the runs. Re-entering an instance you already opened, after dying or walking out, is free.
When the party leader opens an arena, party members are brought in automatically. Each one uses one of their own free runs. A member with no free run left is not pulled in and enters at the desk with an MVP Arena Ticket. Tickets and Rachel's Favor are never spent automatically.
The desk will not open an arena for a character with Assist Mode switched on, or for a player waiting in a duel queue or on the GvG roster. Switch the bot off, or leave the queue at a duel desk, first.
This is the honest shape of it: a ticket buys you sooner, never more than the cap, and never a better drop. The limit is the same for a player who has spent nothing and a player who has spent everything, once both reach 10.
The arena leaderboard
Clears are ranked each week and paid out on Saturday, with prize chests sent by mail and Rachel's Favor on top.
| First | 90 Rachel's Favor |
|---|---|
| Second | 60 Rachel's Favor |
| Third | 30 Rachel's Favor |
| Every other ranked fighter | 9 Rachel's Favor, and a Hunting Box |
How a clear is scored
| Each clear | 100 points, plus 1 point for every 10 seconds you finish under 15 minutes, up to 90 bonus points. One more clear always beats any speed bonus. |
|---|---|
| What counts | Your best 5 clears of the week. Buying more runs buys more attempts, not more rank. |
| Parties | Everyone on the arena floor when the MVP falls gets the same clear, whatever the party size. |
| Leaving early | An MVP you left standing comes back for you until it is defeated, so you cannot close an arena to roll an easier one. |
Kill announcements
When one of the 16 tracked MVPs falls to a player, the whole server is told. That is all it announces.
There is deliberately no respawn timer. An earlier version predicted respawns and counted down, and it was wrong often enough to be worse than silence: it announced an MVP as thirty minutes away while the MVP was alive and killable. A server restart respawns an MVP without resetting any timer, and a kill by anything other than a player never tells the script anything at all. A countdown nobody can trust sends people to an empty map, so there is none.
PvP while an MVP is alive
On the 16 maps an MVP calls home, player versus player is on while that MVP is alive and off the moment it dies. Contesting an MVP means contesting it with everyone else who wants it, and once it is down the map is safe again.
The map list is not written by hand. It is generated from the monster database and the spawn lines the server actually loads, in the same pass that builds the announcement list, so a newly unlocked or relocated MVP is covered without anyone remembering to add it.
