Getting started
Getting started
Download, install and patch Project Ragnarok Online, and what to do with your first hour.
Getting started
Sign up first. The Pre-Register page creates your account once you confirm your email and choose your login, and claims the launch package. The account opens on 15 October if you join the closed beta, or at launch. Download the client and get it patched in the meantime; it is a 3 GB download.
Installing
- Download the full client from the Download page. Downloads run at full speed for the first 150 MB and are then shared out, so it may take a while. That cap exists so a download cannot starve the game server of bandwidth.
- Extract it anywhere you like. Documents or a games folder is fine. Avoid Program Files: patching there needs administrator rights and will fail confusingly.
- Run Ragnarok.exe, not Ragexe.exe. It patches the game and then launches it. The first run opens the Ragnarok Setup window by itself so you can pick your graphics card and screen size. That happens once per PC.
- Let it finish patching. The patcher applies every update in order and stops at the first one it cannot read, so do not close it early.
On an Intel laptop? The download already includes the graphics fix you need, applied automatically. On an AMD laptop it is deliberately not applied. You do not have to do anything either way.
Your first hour, when we open
This is a 1x pre-renewal server at the very beginning of Ragnarok's history, so the early game is genuinely the early game. Nothing here is fast, and that is the point.
- Novice first. Get Basic Skill up: a lot of things, including storage, will refuse you until you have it.
- Pick a first job from the six that are open. See Jobs and classes for what each one becomes, and which second jobs are not available yet, so you do not plan toward a class that is waiting on a later episode.
- Turn on Assist Mode if you want to. It is free forever, on every character, and it earns 60% of what you would earn playing by hand. It is a feature, not something you can be banned for. See Assist Mode.
- Know that trading needs a pass. Dropping, trading, mailing and guild storage all need an active Trade Pass, which you can earn in game with Rachel's Favor or buy. A vending shop needs nothing. See Trading.
- Find the NPCs. Almost everything pRO adds is clustered in Prontera and wears a floating sign. The full list with coordinates is in Where to find everything.
Things worth knowing early
| Dying | Costs 1% of your base experience and 1% of job experience. You never lose Zeny and you never drop items. The one exception is a red player in PK Mode, who loses more and can break a worn item. |
|---|---|
| Rates | 1x on everything the server sets, and the baseline never moves; the scheduled EXP events raise it for a set time. A VIP account earns 20% more base experience and 15% more drops while it is active. |
| Character slots | Five for free. A 7-day VIP pass opens slots 6 to 10, a 30-day pass opens 6 to 15. |
| Refining | The 2002 rules. Past the safe limit, a failure destroys the item and its cards. The only protection is Refine Insurance, which saves the item once. |
| Your gear wears out | Worn equipment loses durability as you play. At zero it stops giving its bonuses but is never destroyed and keeps its cards. Any Repairman fixes it for Zeny. |
| Chat commands | There are none for players. No warp, no heal, no job change. Everything is an NPC you walk to or an item you earn. |
And the one thing to be clear about before you invest time: at launch every account is reset to a clean start. Your username and your characters' names carry over; levels, items and Zeny from testing do not. Your pre-registration package arrives after the reset.

The training dummies
Five dummies in Prontera that you configure yourself. Change a dummy's size, race or element and mix them however you like, or copy a live MVP's defences onto one in a single step: its size, race, element, level, DEF, MDEF, VIT and INT together.
A dummy never dies. It is healed back to full every couple of seconds, and respawned if something manages to kill it anyway. Its name tells you what it currently is, so you can read the setup at a glance rather than remembering it.
The dummies are shared by everyone on the map, so the last person to change one wins. If a dummy is not what you set it to, somebody else is testing too.
